Love What You Do — But Know What It Costs
There are careers you pursue with your heart — teaching, social work, nursing, public service. They’re meaningful, they change lives, they matter. But let’s be honest: they don’t pay what they should. And the cruel irony? To even qualify for many of these roles, you often need a master’s degree. Translation: more debt, less income, and a longer climb to financial stability.
This isn’t about discouraging anyone from following their calling. It’s about going in with your eyes wide open. If you’re going to spend $80,000 on a master’s degree to earn $45,000 a year, you need a plan. That degree is an asset on paper but a liability in practice unless you pair it with a financial strategy that offsets the weak ROI.

- Play the long game. If you’re in a low-paying but high-purpose field, commit to building financial habits that protect you. Live below your means, invest early, and let compounding do its magic.
Passion is powerful. But passion without planning leads to burnout, debt, and frustration. If you’re going to give your life to a profession that society undervalues, at least make sure you’re building assets that value you.
